Story: How I Found True Love and Purpose

Cas Monaco

My dreams as a young girl weren’t very lofty.

I had friends who aspired to be doctors and lawyers, politicians and journalists; I just wanted to get married. I wrote prayers in my diary to a God I didn’t know: “Dear God, please give me a boyfriend.”

“Dear God, please give me a boyfriend.”

My prayers were finally answered. I was planning a wedding. Then, just ten days before the ceremony, the wedding was off. I was devastated.

My neighbor Lynn invited me over for coffee.

There was something different about her. She talked about God like she really knew Him. I knew she’d listen to my story without offering me empty condolences.

Lynn explained that the kind of love that I was looking for wasn’t found in a man. The only place she said I’d find real love was in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Lynn shared a verse from the Bible with me: “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16, New International Version).

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16, New International Version).

She talked to me for a long time about God’s love and forgiveness — both of which I desperately needed.

That afternoon I went home and asked God to forgive my sins and for Jesus to be my Savior. A new and lasting relationship was born out of a ruined and devastating one — along with a new and lasting purpose.

With Lynn’s encouragement, I began praying to this God I barely knew. I moved to a new city and started life over.

As I reflect on those beginning days and months with Jesus, I realize God’s call began with a bang and a whisper. He heard my childhood prayers and stirred up a storm. He entered into my heart and transformed it both instantly and ever so quietly.

Reflect

Whether your circumstances were simple and serene or wild and desperate, He called your name. He invited you to join Him in a new relationship with a lasting purpose.

  • How did Jesus first get your attention? Record the different ways God revealed Himself and His good news of forgiveness to you.

Respond

By faith, trust that God will make His call upon your life clear.

  • Ask the Lord to help you focus as you consider His call in your life.

Keep reading to discover how your “call” begins with a willingness to surrender to Jesus Christ.
